Antisemitic/Anti-Russian Demonstration in Kiev

(May 16, 2008)

Far-right nationalists held an antisemitic and anti-Russian demonstration in Kiev, according to UCSJ's Lviv monitor. On May 14, a group of young people representing the extremist nationalist groups UNA-UNSO and the National Labor Party of Ukraine gathered in front of the Russian embassy screaming antisemitic and anti-Russian slogans like, "No to kike-Russian occupation!" and referring to Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov, whose recent statements about the status of Sevastopol have angered many in Ukraine, by his "secret Jewish name" Katz. The demonstrators then burned a Russian flag. Despite Ukrainian laws banning hate speech, police stood idly by during the demonstration.
